J1 Scholar English Screening (30m)
This appointment is English Screening for prospective J1 Scholars. This 20- to 25-minute assessment is designed to determine whether your level of English oral proficiency is sufficient to be accepted as a J-1 exchange scholar. It measures your ability to communicate in English in an academic setting and present information in your academic area.
Directions:
Task 1: A Brief Conversation
(Speaking Time: 5-7 minutes of conversation with your proctor)
When the proctor begins recording, you will be asked to say your name, EID, and department. Be prepared to discuss topics such as your daily life, your studies, your opinions on topics, and your future plans.

Task 2: Explain what you will be doing at UT Austin
(Speaking Time: 3-5 minutes, followed by 2-3 minutes of Q&A)

Tell us about the work that you will be doing during your time at UT Austin. Choose one of the below to talk about:
a) If you will be conducting research, explain your work in a simple way to someone outside of your field.
OR
b) If you will be teaching, what course will you be teaching? Describe a basic concept that your students will need to learn.

Prepare ONE visual (1 slide only!) that you will screenshare to support your explanation.

You may use an outline or notes, but DO NOT READ. Look up at your computer camera as much as possible.

After your explanation, we will ask you some questions about your research or teaching.

Task 3: Explanation of a Visual (graph, pie charts, infographic)
(Prep Time: 2 minutes; Speaking Time 2-3 minutes)

We will screenshare a graph or chart on a general topic (such as technology or education). We often use infographics from sites such as https://www.statista.com/chartoftheday/

You should
• Provide a general overview of the basic elements in the visual.
• Identify a few specific trends or points that you find interesting (no need to describe every data point in minute detail!).
• Offer an interpretation of the data. You can also comment on how this data relates to you and/or what is not included or unclear to you.

Note: The raters will be listening to your English and are not so concerned about the content of any conclusions you may draw.
On the next screen, please choose your testing month in the drop-down menu.

Once you have received a Zoom link from your proctor, please do not reschedule unless you have a TRUE emergency.
